An amusing collection of Dakota-Sioux fables, often featuring the vain and mischievous imp, Iktomi.
Fables such as these were told to Dakota-Sioux children for entertainment; but often, also, to teach through negative example, the importance of honor, modesty, manners, and other aspects of a noble Indian lifestyle.
Zitkala-Sa (Gertrude Bonnin) was a beautiful Dakota-Sioux Indian. She was a member of the Woman's National Foundation, League of American Pen-Women, and the Washington Salon. Through lectures and stories such as "American Indian Stories" and "Americanize The First American" she tried to make the public aware of Dakota-Sioux Indians, their culture and their plight.
